Richard J. Deckelbaum, MD, CM, FRCP(C), received his education at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He directs the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia University where he holds professorships in nutrition, pediatrics, and epidemiology. Dr. Deckelbaum has published over 400 research and other publications. His laboratory has defined a number of molecular pathways whereby omega-3 fatty acids provide protective benefits in liver and cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction and stroke. He is co-editor of a number of books, such as Preventive Nutrition: The Comprehensive Guide for Health Professionals, now in its 5th edition, and has served on the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academies of Science.
